The Jinkx and DeLa Holiday Show At The London Palladium
The Jinkx and DeLa holiday show is becoming a tradition for me and I am here for it! These superstar drag queens have once again hit London, this year playing to the sold out London Palladium.
The premise is that Jinkx and DeLa are here to save Christmas and in order to do so they get visited by 3 spirits – the spirits of Christmas past, present and future….sound familiar? In visiting Christmas past they need to find out where Christmas went wrong so in doing so we get to see Jinkx and DeLa’s holiday shows through the decades. The premise is fun and one that doesn’t delving into too deeply in order to let Jinkx and DeLa do what they do best and entertain……
As always the contrast between Jinkx and DeLa helps make the show what it is. DeLa with her ever optimistic approach to life and love of Christmas compared to Jinx and her dry sense of humour. Watching the two of them on stage together you can also tell that there is genuine friendship and together they bounce off each other perfectly.
The premise also meant that we got to see Jinkx and DeLa doing their thing through the decades, from the 60’s through to the 90’s. This of course meant outfits from the various decades and spoof songs in the style of numbers from that era.
In act 2 we moved onto the ghost…sorry spirit of Christmas present. The funniest moments were the topical jokes and performances. We were treated to a performance of the biggest song of 2022 complete with a Christmas take on it as well as plenty of jokes about the unoriginality of fashion, culture and music in Christmas present. The show however finishes with their single that has just been released, ‘Looking At The Lights.’ This number was performed at least years show but as they say ‘If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.’
In all of DeLa’s shows I have seen she also has the ability to combine multi-media within the show and this one was no different. On video screens we saw Jinkx and DeLa travelling through time in a huge variety of outfits, a clever way of giving the queens time to change whilst keeping it interesting!
It should be noted that not only do Jinkx and DeLa perform in this show but it is directed by DeLa and co-produced and written by the pair, demonstrating that they are not only brilliant performers but are talented in many other ways, although this would not surprise their fans or indeed fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
I sincerely hope that this holiday tradition continues, the Jinkx and DeLa Holiday Show is the perfect show to kick off the Christmas season with….Christmassy, cheeky and charming!
