With Valentines Day just around the corner some of you may be planning a romantic night in! If so here are some ideas for a romantic musical theatre playlist for it!

I normally do top 10 but with this category there are so many beautiful songs that I have decided to do Top 20!

1. You Matter to Me – Waitress

Because you matter to me
Simple and plain and not much to ask from somebody
You matter to me
I promise you do, you, you matter too

Part of the songs beauty is that Dr Pomatter is already happy with what Jenna offers him and this is simply him telling her that. The song comes as Jenna is wondering if the affair is a mistake but Dr Pomatter reassures her.

2. A Heart Full of Love – Les Miserables

I am lost
I am found
A heart full of light
A night bright as day

This song is essentially Marius and Cosette pronouncing their love for each other while Eponine looks on. It is therefore both heart warming and heart breaking all at the same time.

3. Time Stops- Big Fish

Time stops but still your heart is beating
Time stops though you don’t take a breathe
She’s there and all you’ve ever wanted is nearer, clearer

Time Stops happens as Edwards meets his wife for the first time and it is love at first sight.

4. Only Us – Dear Evan Hansen

So I give you ten thousand reasons to not let me go
But if you really see me
If you like me for me and nothing else
Well, that’s all that I’ve wanted for longer that you could possibly know

Only Us comes when Evan and Zoe are talking. Evan mentions Connor to Zoe and she tells him that she doesn’t want their relationship to be about Connor but just about the two of them.

5. As Long As You’re Mine – Wicked

Just for this moment
As long as you’re mine
Come be how you want to
And see how bright we shine

As long as You’re Mine comes towards the end of the show when Elphaba and Fiyero can finally acknowledge their feelings for each other.

6. Grow Old With You – The Wedding Singer

I’ll miss you, kiss you, give you my coat when you are cold.
Need you, feed you, and even let you hold the remote control.

Grow Old with you happens at Julia and Glen’s wedding which Robbie crashes. Robbie sings this song to Julia and it leads to his proposal…..her answer is in the song!

7. I’ll Cover You – Rent

I’ve longed to discover
Something as true as this is
So with a thousand sweet kisses
(If you’re cold and you’re lonely) I’ll cover you

I’ll Cover You reprise is probably more famous than this original version of the song in the show. The original comes as Angel and Collins confess their love for each other and the sweet, up-tempo nature of it makes the reprise even more heart wrenching. It is also possibly one of the best known queer love songs.

8. Dance With You – The Prom

I just wanna dance with you
Let the whole world melt away
And dance with you

I only discovered this song thanks to the new film and I love that it means I can include another queer song on my list. Dance With You comes as it is revealed that the girl that Emma wants to take to the prom is Alyssa. Alyssa is a popular girl who is closeted and her mother is the chair of the PTA and leading the objections to Emma being able to bring a girl as her date. Alyssa blames Emma for all of the publicity about the Prom but Emma reassures her that all she wants is to be with her.

9. Love Song – Pippin

They say the whole is greater
Than the sum of the parts it’s made of
Well if it’s true of anything
It’s true of love

Love Song comes as Pippin has finally warmed up to Catherine, especially after comforting her son during his pets sickness. It is beautiful in it’s simplicity as Pippin has been searching for his purpose and it begins to look like this simple act of love could be the thing to complete him.

10. What You Mean To Me – Finding Neverland

I’m feeling enlightened
You’re my inspiration
We can fly if we want to
I promise that faith will give you wings

This song comes as Barrie and Sylvie finally admit to each other the extent of their feelings and the love that has grown due to their exploration of the imagination together.

11. All I Ask Of You – The Phantom of The Opera

Say you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime;
Say the word and I will follow you.

All I Ask of You is a duet between Christine and Raoul after Christine has told him about the Phantom. This song is Raoul’s way of promising to Christine that he will look after her and she reciprocates.

12. Come What May – Moulin Rouge

Listen to my heart
Can’t you hear it sings
Telling me to give you everything

Come What May comes after Satine tells Christian that their relationship is endangering the show and the Moulin Rouge itself. Christian responds by writing this love song.

13. All The Wasted Time – Parade

I will never understand
What I did to deserve you,
Or how to be the man
That I’m supposed to be.

All The Wasted time comes after Leo has been convicted and Lucille visits him on a prison work farm. She has persuaded the guard to turn a blind eye and let them have a picnic together. Leo realises just how much he loves her and how he had underappreciated her.

14. Somewhere – West Side Story

There’s a place for us
A time and a place for us
Hold my hand and we’re halfway there
Hold my hand and I’ll take you there

This song happens just after Maria has found out that Tony has killed Bernardo. The scene starts with her enraged with him but she realises that she still loves him and they plan to run away together.

15. In Whatever Time We Have – Children of Eden

There are time I’ve been afraid
In a world that’s so uncertain
Then I feel your hand in mine
And there’s courage in my heart

Japheth and Yonah face a forbidden love and he convinces her to board the ark with him. She agrees and they vow to spend whatever time they together, just as the flood commences.

16. Last Night of The World – Miss Saigon

So stay with me
And hold me tight
And dance
Like it’s the last night of the world

Last Night of the World comes as Chris vows to Kim that he will take her with her when he leaves Vietnam. As he does they dance to the same song that was playing on their first night.

17. One Second And A Million Miles – Bridges of Madison County

You and I are just one second
Spinning by in one split-second.
You and I have just one second
And a million miles to go.

This song comes after Robert has asked Francesca to leave Winterset and go with him and she begins to consider the reality of leaving her husband and children behind.

18. You Should Be Loved- Side Show

You should be treasured

Like a ruby or a diamond

You should be loved in the way I love you

This so is utterly heart-breaking at the same time as being romantic. Jake tells Violet about the love he has carried for her for all the years which Violet has been unable to see.

19. Comic Book Kind of Love – Eugenius

You gave me power beyond my dreams

You tucked yourself into my heart like a laser beam.

20. Dyin Ain’t So Bad – Bonnie & Clyde

There are some things in life
You can’t replace
A love like ours don’t happen twice
When all his days are through
Mine will be too

Dyin Ain’t So Bad comes as Blanche asks Bonnie how she can be happy with her life with Clyde. This song is her reply to Blanche.
