Who Let The Gods Out Polka Theatre
A totally new show for us today, myself and my Greek god loving son, set off to see one we hadn’t read the story of, seen any publicity of or even heard of the theatre.
The show begins with Elliot, sharing an insight into his life – a mum struggling with life, fears of losing their home to debts and a highly obnoxious neighbour who always gets what she wants, well maybe not always!
In a bid to save him mum, Elliot is tricked into freeing the daemon Thanatos, opening up the mortal world to dangers us humans can only imagine. Joined by Virgo, an immortal star, they try to save themselves, his mum and the human race.
Upon entering the theatre, we were greeted by a rather simple set, complete with a mdf board with a window, an air fryer and an ironing board and immediately my expectations lowered a little! I have to admit, I was wrong to do this… the set added clever simplicity to a relatively complicated story, allowing adults and children to focus on following and understanding what was going on.
The cast of five, undertook a total of eight character roles, including some very quick, quick changes and while they were all very good, a special mention must go to Andy Owens, who played Elliot and Harriett O’Grady who played the neighbour, the queen and Elliot’s mum Josie. Their vocals were strong and clear, allowing the story to flow well through their songs. The short songs were catchy and repetitive, allowing the audience to quickly learn the words and repeat the refrains. My son did the actions to Bish, bosh, boom the whole way home on the train, thanks for that Hermes!
The costumes were simple but clearly defined the roles, while a clever use of the rainbow shaped frame of the stage allowed us to be transported between the human world, a prison below Stonehenge and even the astrological home of Virgo and the others.
If you’re looking for the glitz and glitter of the west end, then maybe this isn’t for you but seeking a charming show, which showed how powerful the love humans show for each other, surpasses that of even the mightiest of Gods, then take a seat!
